You've absolutely nailed the problem here. When the conversation is on the phone, the viewer gets some assistance from the phone's address book to figure out that the numbers are the same, however on a computer there's no such help available.
There are 2 issues that I have in terms of dropping the numbers:
1. I don't want to alter the information being backed up.
2. I don't have a full-proof method of figuring out how many digits to remove. On top of that numbers don't always start with + or the country code in the beginning, I've seen numbers without any of that as well.

Emi and others, been reading your problems above which i have encountered, i opened the XML document in Excel and found that my mobile contacts that were saved example - 07 rather than +447 only half of the conversation would appear. although expert, i think what is happening is your friend's phone is texting you +447 you have their number saved in your contacts as 07, and you are texting them back 07. So when you enter in the software the 07 number you end up with your half of the conversation and if you input +447 you end up with your friends half of the conversation. so in order for the software to work properly all your numbers in your contacts book must start with +44 or country of origin.

Ritesh: thanks for all your hard work making this application. Don't if it would work but perhaps if you drop the +44 or 0 on your progamming and detect the rest of the numbers as a match. or make eveybody aware the mobile numbers must start with country of origin.

Hope this helps.

This doesn't work whatsoever. The .XML file (Backup) was moved to my hard drive. All I get is a txt file with "Conversation between ___ and ___" (Names removed here) and nothing else.
Program sucks

I have downloaded the travellinman app for getting a readable version of my texts with a friend onto my PC. However, it only seems to pick up my half of the conversations. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

Hey I did a restore and it asked to check for duplicates so i thought it would restore only the ones which are not there.. but instead it copied everything and now there are duplicates... before restore there were 2000+ messages and now there are 4000+ . What has screwed it up further is that i clicked on backup again and now my backup xml has 4000+ sms... Is there any way to resolve this, to remove dulpicates by some script on computer.? I am using HTC my touch 4g, Stock ROM.
Apart from the above issue..thanks for a such a nice app. :-)

There's a known issue with the timestamps not working properly on some Droid phone. Looks like your phone may be in the affected lot. Unfortunately I don't have a solution for it.

I can't for the life of me get my messages restored in the right conversation order/with the right timestamps. As best I can tell, for any given contact, all incoming messages for a given day are grouped together first and then all sent messages for the same day are subsequently grouped together. The following day the pattern resets/repeats in the thread. It's very odd and not easily read. I have tried restoring with the default settings, as well as Adjust Time Zone “On Restore” and Adjust Time Zone “On View”. Each time I restore I am careful to delete all existing messages to start with a clean message store on the phone. This is a Motorola Droid 2, using the built-in Text Messaging app. I am really surprised that this doesn’t just work as expected, putting the messages back as they were initially.

There's an option in preferences to adjust the timezones when viewing or restoring messages. Give that a try as it solves that problem on some phones.

Hi! I love this app, it took out the conversation I requested, however the messages aren't in the correct order. The first date shown contains all the texts I've received FROM the person, then the next date it will show is all to texts TO that person, and so on. Is there a way to correct this?
